Women's Health Advisors features Ob/Gyn physicians and medical professionals that have volunteered their time in support of the women's Health Forum. The doctors and other professionals spend countless hours each week answering health questions posted to the forum. We thought you might want to learn a little more about these folks.

Joel Kompanietz, MD, CNGOF

OBGYN.net: Please share with us the story of how and why you decided to enter the field of Ob/Gyn.

Dr. Kompanietz: Once upon a time, there was a medical student. In the beginning of his studies, he wanted to be a cardiologist. But, he discovered that was like being a plumber and he was no more interested in it, he wanted more. In his 5th year of study, he was studying in a gynecologic hospital, and the first time he came in the "labour room", that was the revelation!!!: blood, agitation, mother pains... all that he loved most!! No, seriously, he was illuminated by the marvelous revelation of a new baby coming in our poor world.

OBGYN.net: How long have you been in practice and what is the community you serve like?

Dr. Kompanietz: I work in a little public hospital, with 300 births / year and only 2 doctors : 15 of 30 days on work !! The Internet is the best way to escape !

OBGYN.net: What are your particular areas of expertise and interest?

Dr. Kompanietz: My best interest is in obstetrics. But I'm interested in echography and surgery too. On the other hand, I have also a special interest in the legal implications of medicine, and of informatics !! Joel, tell me a little more please about "What" you do in informatics and the legal implications of medicine....Sounds like you are a busy man...I've made my "end of study" memory on legal implications on obstetrics, and I go on keeping an eye on what happens - legally as in, when something is going wrong. On informatics, I'm working both on Internet (and Obgyn.net) and on a French BBS (more open to all specialties.)

OBGYN.net: What is the most rewarding part of being a doctor for you?

Dr. Kompanietz: Last night, at 2 AM, I was telling myself that I was doing the most magnificent thing of a persons life, helping to give birth to a new baby. The only problem is that women do not deliver during the day, and at 2 AM, baby cries are a little bit high for my ears ;-).(grin) But birth is so marvelous.

OBGYN.net: Why did you choose to get involved in the Women's Health Forum?

Dr. Kompanietz: I was involved in Obgyn.net and thought that it was something extra that I could share. France has a particularity, that is, france only. I am interested in discovering other ways of life and sharing knowledge with people all over the world.

OBGYN.net: How do you foresee the Internet and OBGYN.net can better serve Women's Health Care?

Dr. Kompanietz: Communication is the most important point of the end of the 20th century. How could I imagine a world without it. Different experiences can be useful to each other. And the international dimension of Internet seems to me to be a great deal for all of us. I hope you understand all my poor English, I thank you...

Note: Doctor Kompanietz' mother language is French. We did a little English editing for him at his request. But we used a very light hand. We felt that if we changed his words too much we would lose his marvelous sense of humor and "Joie de vivre".
