In this Medical News Minute, Dr. Bobby Lazzara discusses the associations between ranges of gestational weight gain with maternal and infant outcomes.
TRANSCRIPT
Dr. Bobby Lazzar: Published in JAMA Network, a meta-analysis of 25 pooled cohort studies involving almost 200,000 participants looking at the association between ranges of gestational weight gain with maternal and infant outcomes.
Optimal gestational weight gains were estimated from pre-pregnancy BMI’s by selecting the range of weight gain that was associated with the lowest risk for any adverse outcome.
Turns out the risk for a number of adverse outcomes did vary by gestational weight gain, and across the range of pre-pregnancy weights. But, and this is an important but, the ranges of the optimal weight gain selected in the paper had limited predictive value for the adverse outcomes assessed.
The take home... counsel patients on gestational weight gain knowing optimal gestational weight gain for various pre-pregnancy weights and BMI’s is still not an exact science.
