RU-486 hastens cure of women's fibroids and endometriosis

2002 AUG 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- RU-486 appears to hasten cure of women's fibroids and endometriosis, according to recent research.
The fibroid research was conducted by Dr. Steven Eisinger at the University of Rochester Medical School. After 40 women received 6 months of treatment with RU-486, there was "excellent regression" of fibroids. A second trial of 6 months showed equally good results. Women are now being tested to determine whether treatment proves long-lasting.
Endometriosis research was conducted at the University of Rochester Medical Center under Fred M. Howard Jr., MD, professor of OB/GYN, with Dr. Eric Schaff, ARM medical director, as coinvestigator. Present treatment for endometriosis, involving cysts of the uterus and contiguous areas, has proven unsatisfactory. New research will give RU-486 daily for 3 months to 20 otherwise healthy women to determine whether it is an effective and safe treatment.
ARM was the first to manufacture RU-486 in the U.S. and pioneered such advances as cutting the abortion dose from 600 mg, used elsewhere, to 200 mg. This article was prepared by Women's Health Weekly editors from staff and other reports.
