Wulf H. Utian, MB, BCH, PhD - USA
Biographical Statement
Wulf H. Utian, is the Arthur H. Bill Professor Emeritus of Reproductive Biology and Obstetrics and Gynecology, Case Western Reserve University. He is President of Rapid Medical Research, Inc. and has been the Executive Director of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) since he founded the organization in 1989. More recently, he was Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Hospitals of Cleveland and Chairman of the Department of Reproductive Biology, Case Western Reserve University. He is currently Consultant in Women’s Health to the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Utian received his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and his PhD from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the International College of Surgeons.
Dr. Utian is a member of numerous professional societies, both in the United States and abroad, and serves on a number of national and international committees, including the Board of Trustees of The North American Menopause Society and the Medical Health Advisory Board of the Society for Women’s Health Research. He is Chairman of the Council of Affiliated Menopause Societies (CAMS), the policy-making organ of the International Menopause Society.
Dr. Utian is a specialist in the fields of gynecological endocrinology and infertility. He has been an innovator in several aspects of advanced reproductive technology. He has studied the metabolic and psychosocial aspects of estrogen and menopause for over 30 years. In 1967, he established the Groote Schuur Menopause Research Clinic in Cape Town, the world’s first such clinic. He is the recipient of numerous awards and research grants, and is still an active investigator with multiple grants.
During his career, Dr. Utian has written over 150 papers related to the reproductive system in women and has authored five books on menopause and its effects on women. He is editor of both Menopause: The Journal of The North American Menopause Society and Menopause Management. He has served as an advisor to the Office of Technology Assessment (U.S. Federal Government) on menopause and testified before Congress on women’s health issues. He is the Honorary Past President of the International Menopause Society and the Honorary Founding President of The North American Menopause Society. He serves on the editorial review boards of multiple professional publications.
A strong advocate for women’s health, Dr. Utian has achieved international recognition for his work and is interviewed regularly for publications such as Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He appears regularly on television and is the expert on women’s health to NBC-Cleveland. His biography is listed in publications such as Who’s Who in America, International Who’s Who of Professionals, and Who’s Who in the World. He was honored by Good Housekeeping in July 1997 as “one of America’s best physicians in women’s health”, by Ladies Home Journal in March 1999 as one of the “top ten researchers in women’s health”, was the first recipient of the NAMS Lifetime Achievement Award in September 1999, and was honored by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in September 2000 for his achievements in the area of menopause.
