Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions

Narrative Report:

After completing my fellowship in 1997, I served as the Associate Director of the Division and Fellowship in Urogynecology as well as the Assistant Residency Director at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio. In this position, I was actively involved in resident, fellow, and medical student teaching on a daily basis. I was also responsible for strategic direction and expansion of the division and fellowship in areas of clinical and academic growth. During my 2 years in Cincinnati, I had the privilege to contribute to the training of 4 fellows who are now established as regional thought leaders in Urogynecology around the country.

In 1999, I took a position as the Co-director of the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at Mount Auburn Hospital/Harvard Medical School and established a fellowship training program in Urogynecology. Expanding our clinical services, I served as active faculty in the Division of Urogynecology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and was appointed the Director of Urogynecology at New England Medical Center in 2003. All of these roles involved day to day education of medical students, residents, and fellows within the Harvard and Tufts Medical School system. Over the last 4 years, I have been responsible for the training of the fellows and strategic growth of the fellowship with the goal of becoming Board Accredited within the next two years. These responsibilities have now transferred to my current position at Brigham and Women's Hospital as we have established the first cross institutional fellowship in Urogynecology thru a joint program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Massachusetts General Hospital. Subsequent accreditation will require strong interdisciplinary ties with urology, colorectal, neurophysiology, and pelvic floor rehabilitation. I spend an average of 20 hours per week on medical student, resident, and fellow education including clinical supervision, intraoperative training, and didactic lectures. We meet regularly for journal club and research discussions. The fellowship is very active in the areas of clinical research and has presented at every major Urogynecology meeting over the last two years. The fellows are active in publishing a variety of papers including original scientific research, clinical reviews, and book chapters. The fellowship has quickly achieved national reputation and I hope to continue its growth and contribution to the Harvard Medical School System.

I am also active in resident and medical student education, contributing approximately 10 hours per week to these activities. This includes in-office proctorship, intraoperative supervision, and formal didactic lectures on a regular basis. The division is actively involved in training of the Brigham and Women's residents in the operating room, as ward attending, and through a newly developed Urogynecology residency program. A formal didactic series as well as some internship for Harvard Medical students is under development.

On a regional, national, and international level, I have regularly presented scientific data and demonstration of innovative surgical videotapes at our national and international Urogynecology meetings over the last 8 years. I am actively involved in local cadaver lab courses for residents and attendings to review pelvic anatomy and practice laparoscopic skills and techniques, as well as national educational symposium to further develop physician education in the diagnosis and management of pelvic prolapse, urinary incontinence, and reconstructive pelvic surgery.
My current research activities concentrate on clinical outcome, minimally invasive techniques for incontinence in prolapse, and cost benefit studies. I am also actively involved in evaluation and scientific studies of new techniques and instruments in an effort to improve and standardize the quality of care with respect to complex pelvic surgery. The division had various projects in progress in these areas. I hope to continue these activities and expand the scope of the division and my resident/medical student teaching role over the next few years.
