Research and Patient Care:
Calcium and bone metabolism with special attention to: 1. prevention and treatment studies of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease in women (interventions with calcium, calcitriol, estrogen and progestin, selective estrogen receptor modulator, bisphosphonates 2. prevention and treatment of bone loss in children 3. clinical and preclinical research on calcium and strontium absorption in healthy humans and rat model.
He is involved in endocrinological patient's care of the Department of Endocrinology of the Academic Hospital of the Free University.
He is, with his colleaque Dr P. Lips, in charge of heading the Section of Bone and Calcium Metabolism which is one of the four main sections of the Research Institute of Endocrinology, Reproduction and Metabolism.
He is experienced in training students, young research fellows and postgraduate fellows from different backgrounds and nationalities (e.g. medical doctors, biologists, chemists) in clinical and experimental research. Under his responsibility 4 research fellows and 2 postgraduates in collaboration with other staff members are working on large scale research projects. Recently he received the Novo Nordisk Award for Endocrinology 1996 of the Dutch Society of Endocrinology for contributions to calcium metabolism and osteoporosis. He was with Peter Kenemans the organizer of the First Amsterdam Menopause, Symposium 1-3 April 1998.
