Research Interests and Goals:
Physiology and pathology of male and
female reproduction. Stimulators, modulators and regulators of spermatogenesis
and spermiogenesis. Stimulators, modulators, and regulators of folliculogenesis
and ovulation. Mechanism of action of gonadotropins and growth factors on gene
expression and steroidogenesis. Molecular mechanism of cell proliferation and
cell death in hormone dependent tumors.
Previous and Current Research:
Characterized the chemical and
biological nature of human menopausal gonadotropins and discovered their use in
male and female infertility. With his collaborators he established a diagnostic,
therapeutic oriented, classification system for male and female infertility.
Proposed guidelines for the management of infertility and designed effective
treatment protocols. Research focused on the understanding of mechanisms
controlling the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal and adrenal axis and in the
understanding of the nature, development and pathogenesis of diseases leading to
functional abnormalities in this axis. Current research involves: 1) subcellular
and molecular nature of granulosa cell response to gonadotropins, growth factors
and binding globulins. 2) Effects of gonadotropins on spermatogenesis and
spermiogenesis.
Interests and Future projects:
The mode of action of gonadotropins,
growth factors and their binding globulins in ovarian and testicular regulation
and function. The application of results of such basic research to clinical
diagnostic preventive and therapeutic strategies. Development of strategies in
teaching and transfer of technology related to endocrinology and reproduction.
