THE ISGE NEWS
Report of the Chair of the 8th Annual Congress of ISGE,
Montreal, April 25-28, 1999
By: Togas Tulandi, M.D.

The 8th Annual Congress of ISGE in Montreal was a success. It was attended by 426 delegates from 43 countries, 120 exhibitors and 55 accompanying persons; a total of 601 participants. The highlight of the opening ceremony was a performance of Jack Cohen, a plastic surgeon and an internationally renowned classical whistler and the Kahnawake Thunder Hawk Indian dancers. In the absence of the ISGE President Carl Wood, the Vice President Jack Sciarra presented the 1998 and the 1999 honorary memberships to Robert Neuwirth and Jacques Rioux respectively. The keynote lecturers were Victor Gomel, who presented his vision for the new millenium; Harry Reich presented his experience of a decade of laparoscopic hysterectomy and Alan de Cherney renewed his foresight on the obituary of laparotomy for some gynecologic procedures. The feedback from the attendees and the industries was very positive in every aspect of the meeting. Among the free communications, the best oral presentation went to FH Loh (Singapore), the best poster presentation went to SF Loh (also from Singapore, "they are not related") and the best video presentation was awarded to Grace Janik (USA). Nadir Chan (Indonesia), Sheila Chirayath (Brunei) and Neville Galen (Canada) won the raffles. Each received a beautiful piece of Canadian artwork.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve as the Chair and the host of the meeting. I would like to acknowledge the contribution, advice and assistance of the members of the ISGE Board and the members of Scientific, National and International Advisory Committees.

Respectfully submitted,

Togas Tulandi M.D.
1999 Congress Chair
