Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the ISGE, our Scientific Committee and the Local Organizing Committee, I would like to invite you to the upcoming 10th Annual ISGE Congress to be held in Chicago, march 28-31, 2001. I am particularly pleased that this event is co-sponsored by Northwestern University Medical School. The Congress will feature new dimensions in gynecology and gynecologic surgery. The theme of the 2001 Congress is Gynecologic Endoscopy, Today and Tomorrow.

The program will present an internationally distinguished group of clinicians and scientists, all of whom have made major contributions to the field of gynecologic endoscopy. Emphasis will be on those areas where endoscopy is changing the practice of gynecology, including oncology, urogynecology and pelvic reconstruction surgery. Other areas of consideration will include infertility, endometriosis, pelvic pain, myomectomy and hysterectomy.

Key portions of the program will be devoted to advances in operative laparoscopy and operative hysteroscopy, as well as gynecologic imaging and medical gynecology. Daily keynote lectures will showcase the work of both preeminent physicians and pioneers in the discipline. Participants will find a useful forum for the discussion of evidence-based endoscopy and a critical analysis of clinical studies.

The Congress will present an opportunity for individuals with all levels of endoscopic training to exchange ideas with their colleagues and to learn from experts who will share their latest findings, explain new techniques and conduct debate. We will be featuring new technology in endoscopy and an extensive industrial exhibit is planned to allow manufacturers to show their latest equipment. An optional innovative pre-congress interactive workshop will provide a unique opportunity for the practicing gynecologist to have individual expert instruction in laparoscopic pelvic surgery. There will definitely be topics of interest to all.

During the event, you will also discover an exhilarating, cosmopolitan city that offers a superb mix of art, fine dining, entertainment, history, sports and has one of the most recognizable skylines in the world.

Greetings from Budapest Hungary. The annual Regional Meeting of the International Society for Gynecological Endoscopy was held August 30 to September 2, 2000. The program was entitled “Laparo-Vaginal Surgery in the 21st Century.” This program was chaired by Professor István Szábo, who served as chairman of the Congress. Professor István Rákóczi was chairman of the organizing committee. The opening session and welcome reception were held on a unique venue, the ship “Budapest” on the river Danube. N. Kadar introduced the keynote lecturer I. Marton who spoke on the role of vaginal surgery in the 21st century. Following this very interesting lecture, which presented a challenge to all of us, the program continued with a Hungarian feast and a wonderful time was had by all.

Our compliments to the organizing committee for their outstanding plenary sessions held the morning of the first day. The technical support, the organization and the accommodations were all absolutely first-class. We are all most fortunate to have been a part of this program.

The next meeting of the ISGE will be the Chicago Annual Congress, March 28 to March 31, 2001. Further information can be found in this issue of the newsletter.

This issue of the newsletter also contains the ISGE Congress Application, both conditions and the application form itself. As the ISGE is on a three year planning cycle, we are currently accepting applications for the years 2004 and 2005 for both Annual and Regional meetings. Please submit your application using the attached format to the ISGE Secretariat by January 2001 so that the application can be processed and discussed at our Chicago meeting.

In this issue of the newsletter we have included an homage to János Veres, the Hungarian creator of the Veres needle. Our thanks to István Rákóczi for this illuminating article and for his wonderful program.

Sincerely,

James E. Carter, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.O.G.
