
Hewlett-Packard Company is helping to make state-of-the-art medical care available to the children of China by donating advanced medical equipment and supplies, valued at $5.5 million, to the Shanghai Children's Medical Center (SCMC) in the Shanghai Pudong district. The facility, which opens in stages, starting in June 1998, is sponsored by Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) in collaboration with Shanghai Second Medical University.
SCMC, China's first major pediatric referral and teaching hospital, will provide state-of-the art clinical care for children with serious health problems. The hospital will showcase the best of Western medical technology and serve as a national training center for modern pediatric medicine. It also will serve as a model for future medical centers in China.
HP's Medical Products Group is providing SCMC with patient monitoring, ultrasound imaging, clinical information systems and resuscitation equipment, along with all necessary accessories and supplies. The more than 130 major pieces of equipment and more than 3,500 accessories and supplies will be used throughout the hospital, including in the emergency department, pediatric intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, cardiology labs, surgical suites, nursing stations, observation areas and at patient bedsides.
HP medical products can help speed diagnosis and communication of vital patient data throughout SCMS, thereby enhancing clinical decision-making for optimal patient care.
SCMC will treat more than 250,000 children a year in its fully equipped new facility, which consists of 250 beds, 10 operating rooms and 36 intensive-care beds. The hospital also encompasses clinical-research facilities, complete imaging and laboratory services, day surgical facilities, a biomedical engineering laboratory, a dialysis center and an ambulatory care center with all medical specialties.

HP Viridia Information Center is a family of client/server-based systems that enable clinicians to provide more effective care through the analysis, integration and management of patient information. The HP Viridia Information Center provides simultaneous access to the same patient's data from multiple locations throughout the hospital. A comprehensive suite of clinical decision-support tools provides clinicians with a quick review of patient condition and treatment status for fast and thorough decision making. Such accurate measurement algorithms as the ST/AR multilead arrhythmia algorithm ensure the integrity of the data.
The HP Viridia Information Center offers continuous display and analysis of patient waveforms, numerics and color-coded alarms on a well-organized display. Simultaneous review of multiple applications gives clinicians a clearer and more complete picture of a patient's condition. With its flexible configuration, it can function as a centrally located workstation; as an auxiliary workstation for remote locations; or as a stand-alone, conventional central monitor. The system can be configured easily to meet unit protocols and specific patient needs.
The HP Viridia CMS, with space-saving flat screen display, is the most recent evolution of the HP CMS, the world's top-selling, acute-care patient monitor. The CMS is the first and only patient monitor in the industry to deliver urgent blood-test results for blood gases, electrolytes and other chemistries in about two minutes, with as little as two drops of whole blood. Clinicians can perform the tests and make fast diagnoses and treatment decisions without leaving the patient's side.

The HP SONOS 5500 offers exceptional image quality and allows real-time visualization of the beating heart and associated vasculature, providing information to help cardiologists and vascular specialists treat cardiovascular disorders.
The SONOS 5500 features HP's second-generation OmniPlane II probe, with a tip capable of evaluating even the tiniest of patients. The lightweight and compact transthoracic OmniPlane transducer allows quick interrogation of the entire heart, making 3-D exams more efficient.
