Gallup Survey Commissioned to Study Satisfaction with Oral Contraceptive Use Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Organon Continue Commitment to Women's Health

WASHINGTON, July 27 -- The Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) today announced sponsorship of a new Gallup Organization survey, to be funded by a grant from Organon Inc., to study the use of oral contraceptives in the United States.

The survey will examine women's attitudes towards oral contraceptives including concern with nuisance side effects, awareness of beneficial side effects and the level of satisfaction with available oral contraceptive options. Survey results will be announced in September.

"Contraception and family planning are essential issues in women's health medical education," said Robert Barbieri, MD, President, APGO Medical Education Foundation. "APGO hopes that the insights gained from this study will help tomorrow's physicians more effectively prescribe oral contraceptives, and help women decide which contraceptive is best for them, " said Dr. Barbieri.

APGO will use the results of the survey as part of their Education Series on Contraception, an ongoing educational program for physician educators of obstetrics and gynecology students. "Educating future health care providers with the latest information on hormone and non-hormone contraceptives is vital to providing women the best possible health care," said Dr. Barbieri.

The survey underwriter is Organon Inc. of West Orange, NJ, the U.S. affiliate of N.V. Organon, a renowned international ethical pharmaceutical company. Organon maintains an unprecedented commitment to women's health care, conducting research in three critical areas: contraception, fertility and hormone replacement therapy.

The APGO Educational Series on Women's Health Issues was developed to ensure the highest standards of obstetrics and gynecologic medical education. APGO represents academic obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States and Canada, and seeks to advance and improve the study, teaching methods and research activities which promote excellence in the training of health care professionals who care for women.
