American Board of
Genetic Counseling
The American Board of Genetic Counseling prepares and administers examinations
to certify individuals who provide services in the medical genetics specialty of genetic counseling and accredits
genetic counseling training programs.
American Board of
Medical Genetics
The American Board of Medical Genetics certifies individuals and accredits training
programs in the field of human genetics.
American College
of Medical Genetics
The American College of Medical Genetics is committed to making genetic services
available to the American Public without regard to age, race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability
or ability to pay. The College will foster the development and implementation of methods of diagnosis, treatment
and prevention of genetic disease in order to improve the public health. It will sponsor educational programs for
geneticists, the medical community and the public at large.
American Society
of Human Genetics
The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), founded in 1948, is the primary
professional membership organization for human geneticists in North America. Over 5,000 members include researchers,
academicians, clinicians, laboratory practice professionals, genetic counselors, nurses and others involved in
human genetics. The principal objectives of ASHG are to bring together investigators in the many areas of endeavor
that involve human genetics, and to encourage and integrate their efforts by providing a forum for sharing research
findings.
Association of Professors
of Human or Medical Genetics
The Association of Professors was incorporated in 1995 to promote human and medical
genetics educational programs in North American medical and graduate schools.
Clinical Genetics Home Page
Information for genetic professionals at the University of Kansas Medical Center
is updated regularly for genetic counselors, clinical geneticists, and medical geneticists, with links to
clinical, research, and educational resources.
Cooperative Human Linkage Center (CHLC)
The goal of the Cooperative Human Linkage Center is to develop statistically
rigorous, high heterozygosity genetic maps of the human genome that are greatly enriched for the presence of easy-to-use
PCR-formatted microsatellite markers.
Council of Regional
Networks for Genetic Services (CORN)
The Council of Regional Networks for Genetic Services (CORN) was formed in 1985
to provide a forum for dialogue and national coordination among the ten regional networks representing all fifty
states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. CORN brings together network representatives
to encourage and facilitate communication and planning for genetic services as well as addressing national public
health priorities in genetics.
European Society of Human Genetics
The European Society of Human Genetics is a non-profit organization and its aims
are to promote research in basic and applied human and medical genetics and to facilitate contact between all persons
who share these aims. The society will encourage and integrate research and professional and public education in
all areas of human genetics.
From Maps to Medicine: About the Human Genome Research Project
The Human Genome Project is an ambitious effort to understand the hereditary
instructions that make each of us unique. The Human Genome Project is designed to speed this process once and for
all by providing new tools and techniques that will enable scientists to find genes quickly and efficiently.
Frontiers in Bioscience -
The Virtual Library
Great references for all topics in bioscience. Includes useful reference
tools.
Genetic Testing
Policies Must Stress Informed Consent
Addressing concerns about the many implications of genetic testing, a report
from a committee of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences outlines policy guidelines and
legislative recommendations intended to avoid involuntary and ineffective testing and to protect confidentiality.
Genetics Education Center
For educators interested in human genetics and the human genome project.
Genetics Societies Home Page
A listing of various societies involved with genetics, whose individual links
are included within this page, divided by category.
The Genetics Society of America Founded in 1931, the Genetics Society of America offers membership to scientists and academicians interested in the field of genetics studies. The Society publishes the journal GENETICS which is circulated monthly to members of the Society and approximately 2,000 libraries worldwide.
Genline Demonstration Page
Genline is a knowledge base of expert-authored, up-to-date information relating
genetic testing to the diagnosis, management, and counseling of individuals and families with inherited disorders.
Genline complements Helix:
A Directory of Medical Genetics Laboratories, which provides listings
of clinical and/or research laboratories performing testing for heritable disorders.
Genome Research Journal On-Line
Subscription based journal, with past issue archives and selected articles from
the current issue.
Helix: A Directory of Medical Genetics
Laboratories
Helix is a directory of laboratories providing testing for genetic disorders.
Laboratories are listed by disease name and both research and diagnostic laboratories are included. Note: Helix is restricted to health care professionals,
who must register with Helix to receive a password.
Human
Genome Project: Ethical, Legal, & Social Issues
Serious study is now under way on the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI)
related to increasingly rapid progress in understanding human genetics. Four areas were identified by advisers
to the ELSI program for initial emphasis: privacy of genetic information, safe and effective introduction of genetic
information in the clinical setting, fairness in the use of genetic information, and professional and public education.
The Human Transcript Map
Genome sequences from a master catalog of human genes, mapping data integrated
relative to the human genetic map and cross-referenced cytogenetic band maps of the chromosomes.
MIT Center for Genome Research
This is a World-Wide Web server run by the Center for Genome Research at the
Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It contains information on map and sequence
releases, software and people at the Genome Center.
Nucleic Acids Database Project
