Professional experience

Current position :

Senior Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Currently employed as a Senior Specialist (Consultant)/Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Baragwanath Hospital. This is a senior consultant position in the department. Baragwanath Hospital is the major referral hospital for the estimated three million population of Soweto, outside Johannesburg, South Africa. The Maternity hospital delivers complicated pregnancies (17 000 women per year) and the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology works in liaison with 10 midwife delivery units in the township, which deliver a further 12 000 uncomplicated cases.

Special responsibilities within the Department include supervision of the daily management of the maternity unit and a large proportion of departmental administration. Duties include regular obstetric ultrasound scanning sessions, co-ordinating the care of HIV positive women within the department and running an antenatal clinic for HIV positive women, in addition to labour ward and clinic duties.

The post also involves teaching 4th, 5th and 6th year medical students during their time in the department, organising and chairing a weekly post-graduate Journal Club, co-ordinating weekly post-graduate meetings and organising the Annual Departmental Research Day.

Responsibility for community obstetrics and gynaecology areas within the department has also led to a wider involvement in Reproductive Health issues including liaison with other departments within the university, other organisations and wide media contact including newspaper, television and radio interviews on subjects such as AIDS and abortion.

Co-Director of the Reproductive Health Research Unit
As Co-Director of the RHRU, I am jointly responsible for the activities of the Unit, in research, training and policy development in reproductive health.

The Baragwanath Reproductive Health Research Unit was formed by Dr Helen Rees and Dr James McIntyre in 1994 to provide a centre for relevant reproductive health research. It is a joint unit of the Baragwanath Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Chamber Health, Housing and Urbanisation Department.

The unit aims to conduct research-with-action programmes which will influence and develop reproductive health services within the Johannesburg/Soweto urban area, and can serve as models for the country, and to develop appropriate training materials for the country, in collaboration with international agencies. The unique structure and position with access to primary care services in the city and the hospital services will enable significant health systems and service development research.

The Unit initiated and organised the 1st Reproductive Health Priorities conference in 1994 and the 2nd conference in August 1995. The Unit also co-ordinated the World Health Organisation/SA Assessment of Family Planning service in 1994.

Co-Director, Perinatal HIV Research Unit
The Baragwanath Perinatal HIV Research Unit is a joint Research Unit of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics of the University of the Witwatersrand at Baragwanath. The Research Unit developed from a combined Perinatal HIV Clinic for mothers and children with HIV, initiated by myself in 1991 and run in conjunction with Dr Glenda Gray. The Research Unit was formalised in 1995 and is collaborating with UNAIDS, The Institute for Child Health in London, the European Collaborative Study of Children Born to HIV Positive Mothers and several other international and South African AIDS researchers. The Unit is one of five centres in Africa collaborating on a major UNAIDS research project on vertical transmission of HIV.
