When it comes to providing women's health information on the Internet, Dr. Perloe is recognized worldwide as the pioneer. If you go any place on the Internet, that offers women's health information, there is probably a link to all or part of Dr. Perloe's Atlanta Reproductive Health Centre Web site. During the early development of OBGYN.net, Dr. Perloe was at our side offering advise and guidance. He continues to support OBGYN.net as a member of the Advisory Board. It is with great pleasure that we present the OBGYN.net Outstanding Achievement Award to Dr. Mark Perloe a true visionary.
Below are Mark's answers to some questions we asked.
OBGYN.net: How are you serving the Ob/Gyn community with Internet Technology?
Dr. Perloe: Many OB/GYN physicians have chosen to incorporate the patient information on our site for use with their own patients. I feel this site provides information that can help patients better understand their problems and provide more appropriate information to their physicians. It also helps patients understand what is reasonable to expect from their physicians and to understand their own responsibility.
OBGYN.net: Why did you get involved with the Internet?
Dr. Perloe: I found that there was a lack of clear, concise, patient focused information. The internet allows patients to receive either concise or in depth info on topics of interest. The multimedia component is an excellent teaching tool. Also, I am just a long time computer geek and enjoy the opportunity to combine a hobby and a job and provide a valuable service to people around the world.
OBGYN.net: How long have you been using the Internet?
Dr. Perloe: About two years now.
OBGYN.net: What has been your greatest reward in using the Internet?
Dr. Perloe: The many thank you notes and baby pictures I receive say it all. Read the guestbook to see how people are starving for information that makes them an active partner in their healthcare treatment.
OBGYN.net: What is the future for the Ob/Gyn community on the Internet- what is possible?
Dr. Perloe: That is difficult. In the near future, the internet will become an everyday tool as television, newspaper, radio and telephone are today. The internet offers the promise of the best of all these communication media.
I envision interactive multimedia CME. We will be able to participate in online medical lectures on just about any topic.
The patients medical record will be internet accessible and will contain all the multimedia components necessary to document an illness and the care provided.
Appointment scheduling, New patient forms, patient educational pamphlets, insurance verification, hospital records, will all be enhanced by internet connectivity.
