Just click here and read this month's featured articles then join the discussion at The Fibroid Resource Center Discussion Forum. Dr. Parker, along with Dr. Francis Hutchins, Jr. and Dr. Richard Chudacoff are answered selected questions about fibroids.
OBGYN.net: How are you serving the Ob/Gyn community with Internet Technology?
Dr. Parker: Our websites provide reliable medical information for women who have gynecologic problems, including fibroids
(http://www.fibroidsecondopinion.com), incontinence (http://www.theincontinencesolution.com) and other gynecologic problems
(http://www.gynsecondopinion.com).
OBGYN.net: Why did you get involved with the Internet?
Dr. Parker: We put our first site up in 1996 following the publication of our book, A Gynecologist’s Second Opinion. I also put a contact the doctor link and, within the first year, had answered 1500 e-mails from countries all over the world. I had to take the link down because I was unable to handle all the messages and the medical legal issues were not yet defined. However, that experience showed me how powerful a tool the internet could be.
OBGYN.net: How long have you been using the Internet?
Dr. Parker: Since 1995.
OBGYN.net: What has been your greatest reward in using the Internet?
Dr. Parker: Patients are so grateful when you try to help them interpret information from their doctor or from test results. They also are frustrated with the lack of information they receive and are relieved to find reliable information online.
OBGYN.net: What is the future for the Ob/Gyn community on the Internet - what is possible?
Dr. Parker: I think the internet will become the major resource for medical education, for both practicing physicians and those in training. Especially where exposure to surgical cases is limited, such as with
endoscopic procedures, doctors can watch videos online and some day even “chat” with the surgeon to get pearls and pointers about technical issues.
Patients are already accessing the internet for medical information and, hopefully, there will be a better way to insure that information is accurate.
