Atlanta Center for Laparoscopic Urogynecology
John
Miklos, MD and Robert D. Moore DO
OBGYN.net: How are you serving the Ob/Gyn community with Internet Technology?
Dr. Moore: By supplying the Ob/Gyn community the most up to date and extensive website on urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery. Up to date videos of our procedures, clear illustrations of pelvic anatomy and descriptions of surgical procedures with clear color pictures and illustrations. It also provides their patients with a website that is patient friendly, describes the various disease states and pathology in our field in an understandable format The content is not only for healthcare providres and physicians but is also easily understood by patients as well. Patients can then understand the recommendations their doctor has made and what the procedure they may be having entails and why it is being done. It also offers them many links to find more information about their particular problem.
OBGYN.net:Why did you get involved with the Internet?
Dr. Moore: To provide patients with up to date, detailed information as a way to educate them with correct information, instead of incomplete confusing information. It also provides patients with information about choices they can make, i.e., they may not know that there are surgeons that they can travel to so they may have a procedure completed laparoscopically instead of open with a much longer recovery.
OBGYN.net: How long have you been using the Internet?
Dr. Moore: Since 1996, approximately 8 years.
OBGYN.net: What has been your greatest reward in using the Internet?
Dr. Moore: Being able to communicate with patients from all over the world and to be able to educate them and offer them correct information about the problems they may be having. Prior to the Internet, patients were stuck without being able to talk to others that have the same problem they may have or talk to experts outside of their immediate geographic location. It also allows me as a professional to communicate and exchange ideas with other experts in my field on the other side of the world.
OBGYN.net: What is the future for the Ob/Gyn community on the Internet - what is possible?
Dr. Moore: To utilize the Internet for virtual or real time consultations on patients in the office or operating room. To connect to educational seminars or CME events, to lecture or participate from hundreds or thousands of miles away. To continue to offer patients and physicians real time educational seminars that they can watch live surgery, interact with us in the operating room, ask questions, learn anatomy, etc. And to continue to offer patients the best information available.
