Born in Milan, Italy, in 1954. M.D. degree cum laude at the University of Milano, Italy, in 1979; specialization cum laude in Medical Nephrology in 1982.

Between 1982 and 1996 she worked as an Assistant Nephrologist in the First Medical Clinic of the University of Milano at the Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico. Since 1996 she is working in the Bone Metabolic Unit of the Endocrinology Division of the Istituto Auxologico Italiano, IRCCS, a private not-for-profit clinical care and research institution.

Between 1986 and 1993 she was a teacher in the National Courses on Computerized Bone Mineralometry. Between 1989 and 1995 she was a professor of "Uremic osteodistrophy" in the School for Specialization in Medical Nephrology of the University of Milano. Between 1989 and 1991 she was a professor of "Diagnosis of nephrologic diseases" in the School of Odontology of the University of Milano. Since 1992 she is a Tutor in the courses on Medical Therapy and Medical Nephrology in the Medical School of the University of Milano.

She has done clinical research in the field of bone and mineral metabolism, focusing on the epidemiology, physiopathology and therapy of skeletal demineralizing diseases, and on the new diagnostic techniques for the measurement of bone mass (photon absorptiometry and X-ray bone densitometry, quantitative bone hystomorphometry, radioimmunological dosage of calciotropic hormones).

She authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific publications, and presented scientific communications in most International Conferences and Meetings on bone and mineral metabolism. She wrote chapters for several books.

She was Scientific Secretary in the 10th International Bone Densitometry Workshop, Venice 1994 and the "Third Meeting of the European Group for Quantitative Bone Mass Measurements in Pediatrics" (Milan, Italy, 1997); she was a member of the International Scientific Committee of the "First International Conference on Children's Bone Health" (Maastricht, The Netherlands, 1999). She is Scientific Advisors for the forthcoming Conference "Bone Densitometry: Technology and Applications in the 21th Century" (Rio de Janiero, Brazil, May 8-13, 2000). She has been asked to chair the "Third International Conference on Children's Bone Health" in 2005.

She is a member of the following Scientific Societies:

  • International Society of Nephrology since 1983
  • International Bone and Mineral Society (formerly ICCRH), since 1988
  • American Society of Bone and Mineral Metabolism since 1988.


She participated in the activities of the non-profit organization "Italian League of Osteoporosis" (LIOS) since 1981, and since 1996 she is General Secretary of the League. Since 1994 she is a member of the Board of the National Societies of the "International Foundation for Osteoporosis" (IOF), a representative for Italy in the IOF Board of the Patients Oriented Societies, and a member of the IOF Working Group on World Osteoporosis Day. She is also a representative for LIOS in the Bone and Joint Decade Committee.
