Abdominal Hysterectomy Not Always Appropriate

(San Francisco, CA) "The goal of vaginal hysterectomy, laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH), and laparoscopic hysterectomy (LH) is to avoid an abdominal wall incision," said Dr. Harry Reich, scientific program chair for the Fourth World Symposium of Laparoscopic Hysterectomy. Recognized as the first United States surgeon to perform LH, Dr. Reich will teach an acclaimed assembly of gynecologic professionals that abdominal hysterectomy is not always the most suitable choice.

Constituting billions of dollars annually, abdominal hysterectomy is often recommended by physicians not trained in the advanced techniques of laparoscopic surgery. Sponsored by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) to be held in San Francisco, this symposium will include 16 hours of postgraduate instruction including live telesurgery lead by endoscopic surgeons from across the nation. This conference will disseminate the recent advances in laparoscopy while providing a balanced approach to teaching a variety of solutions before abdominal hysterectomy is performed. "New laparoscopic techniques allow fibroids to be treated with myomectomy (removal of just the fibroids) or myoma coagulation (shrinking the fibroids)," said Dr. Parker, co-scientific program chair. "Likewise, abnormal uterine bleeding may be treated, or endometriosis removed without hysterectomy. These techniques are available through an increasingly large number of gynecologists and women should seek these doctors out."

Many of these experts will be lecturing, presenting and performing the advances of minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy (LH) during this year's symposium at the ANA Hotel, April 4-6, 1997. Dr. Parker mentioned the resounding benefits of LH include shorter hospital stay (one day versus 3-4), less pain during and following surgery and a quicker recovery (two weeks versus six), all of which are attributes elevating endoscopic standards for physicians and patients.
