(San Francisco, CA) Hysterectomy is big business in the United states. The New York Times recently reported it constitutes a $3 billion a year industry. And although the United States represents the largest nation practicing endoscopy--microsurgery through tiny abdominal ports to visualize internal organs--its benefits during hysterectomy are rarely recognized.
Too often physicians not familiar with endoscopy will suggest hysterectomy as the only treatment for many gynecologic conditions when minimally invasive techniques could be used instead. These techniques dramatically reduce scarring, patient discomfort and time lost from work. Recognizing the need to educate physicians in the latest endoscopic techniques, the Fourth World Symposium on Laparoscopic Hysterectomy will offer live telesurgery, academic debates, hands-on labs and hours of workshops and exhibitions. "As more physicians acquire training and expertise in these new techniques, the need for major surgery will decline," said William H. Parker, MD, co-scientific program chair.
Sponsored by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), the scientific program runs April 4-6, 1997, at the San Francisco ANA Hotel.
